Tico Wind is one of the most reliable sailing spots in the world, with wind almost every day from November to March. It is located in Costa Rica near the town of Tilarán on the edge of Lake Arenal. The opposite end of the lake from the famous volcano.

it is a beautiful spot, but windy almost every day. We say in Alberta that if you don't like the weather, wait fifteen minutes. At Tico Wind, it is more like five minutes. I have seen rainstorms on one end of our small beach that never hit the other, and have been out sailing in pouring rain that never got to shore.

It is a great place to sail, and there are many folks who have gone there year after year for 20 or more years, some staying for three or four months at a time. This year, I went with my friend Gerry, and we spent three weeks.

We rented rooms from an American friend Tom who went to Costa Rica 30 years ago, married a local girl, and never left.

This year, we sailed almost every day that we were there. We met many old friends and a few new ones. It is a unique place with sailors from all over the world.

It was not uncommon at lunch time to have people from Canada, Germany, Costa Rica, Mexico, Venezuela, Spain, Russia, and the U.S. We were all there to sail. We all got along famously, and we all enjoyed each other's company.
Peter and Cristl, who own and run Tico Wind are wonderful hosts. They provide a hot lunch every day which is just excellent, and considering it is made in the middle of the jungle with no power, it is amazing!

We made many friends. I enjoyed taking photos and sharing them with everyone. Windsurfers and Kiters love to have photos of themselves, and it is always a great ice breaker. "Have a look at this, I happened to get a few shots of you yesterday..."

It was a great trip. I was very sad to leave, but also happy to get home!
